ARLINGTON, Va. — The Newseum, the world’s only interactive museum of news, has created a mobile exhibit that will bring some of the museum’s most popular artifacts, videos and displays to Kingston, R.I., from Sept. 22-26. The Providence Journal will co-host NewsCapade’s visit to the city. Newseum’s NewsCapade with Al Neuharth will be at the University of Rhode Island in the Roosevelt Hall parking lot. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, except Saturday, Sept. 23, and Sunday, Sept. 24, when NewsCapade will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to NewsCapade is free. Since the traveling exhibition was launched in San Francisco in April 1999, more than 230,000 people have visited NewsCapade. Visitors to NewsCapade begin their experience in a 45-seat theater that shows the award-winning film, “What’s News?” narrated by CBS News’ Charles Osgood. Interactive computers let visitors act as newspaper editors selecting front-page stories or photojournalists covering breaking news. Visitors also can experience the excitement and challenge of being television reporters as they go in front of a camera to read the news. Other exhibits include an “Interview a Journalist” interactive kiosk, unforgettable news photos, historic newspaper front pages, news artifacts, a timeline of 20th-century news and a look at the power of the First Amendment. Each visitor may receive a free printout of “The Birthday Banner,” the Newseum’s custom-designed computer program that delivers a front page with the news from an individual’s month and year of birth. Joining NewsCapade in Rhode Island is Allen H. Neuharth, founder of USA TODAY. At 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, Neuharth will be participating in a free, public program with regional newspeople and newsmakers to discuss “Media at the Millennium.” Neuharth also is founder of The Freedom Forum, the international media-oriented foundation that created and funds the Newseum. The Freedom Forum, Newseum and NewsCapade are not affiliated with the Gannett Co. or USA TODAY. “The Newseum in Arlington, Va., is helping visitors there get a better understanding of the relationship between the news media and the public. We hope NewsCapade can do the same all across the USA,” Neuharth said. Newseum’s NewsCapade with Al Neuharth is one of the largest mobile museum exhibitions on tour. Two custom-designed 53-foot trailers are joined, creating a vaulted pavilion with nearly 2,000 square feet of interior space. Visitors to NewsCapade can enter a “Win a Trip” contest which includes two round-trip tickets on US Airways to Washington, D.C., two nights accommodations and an escorted tour of the Newseum. This year, the exhibit will visit Kennedy Space Center, Fla.; Jackson, Miss.; Little Rock, Ark.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Lincoln, Neb.; Dubuque, Iowa; Tulsa, Okla.; Wichita, Kan.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Lansing, Mich.; Yellowstone National Park, Wyo.; Boise, Idaho; Missoula, Mont.; Anchorage, Alaska; Fargo, N.D.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Essex Junction, Vt.; Manchester, N.H.; Mystic, Conn.; Portland, Maine; Jersey City, N.J.; Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Louisville, Ky; and Honolulu, Hawaii. By the end of this year, the exhibit will have visited all 50 states and one Canadian province. Peter S.
