URI sponsors peace poster project for K-12 students

Contest held in conjunction with Honors Colloquium on nonviolence KINGSTON, R.I. — September 21, 2000 — The University of Rhode Island is asking students in grades K-12 to create a poster illustrating how to make the world more peaceful. Cosponsored by The Providence Journal, the project is being held in conjunction with URI’s Fall Honors Colloquium, “Nonviolence: Legacies of the Past, Bridges to the Future,” a series of public programs addressing the theme of peace and nonviolence. The peace poster project is designed to encourage students to reflect on their personal role in creating a peaceful, nonviolent society. Students are asked to create a poster with a slogan responding to the question, “What can I do to make my world more peaceful?” It is not necessary to be a talented artist to enter. All it takes is a thoughtful idea and a unique design. Deadline for submissions is October 27, 2000. Winning entrants in each of four age categories will receive U.S. Savings Bonds, and their posters will be placed on public display. All participants will receive certificates of recognition. For complete contest details and an entry form, contact Jan Sawyer or Todd McLeish in the URI News Bureau at 874-2116 or at jsawyer@advance.uri.edu or tmcleish@advance.uri.edu .
