KINGSTON, R.I. — Jan. 12, 2001 –The Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center will present a daylong workshop for health care providers of the elderly. Ethics and Diversity in Geriatrics, Workshop V, will be held at Canonicus Camp and Conference Center in Exeter, R.I. on Friday, Feb. 2, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Frederic Reamer, Ph.D., and Deoshore Haig, M.S.W., are the guest speakers, along with an ethnogeriatrics panel. The registration fee of $100 covers materials, continuing education units, lunch, parking and refreshments. Group rates are available. Reamer, a professor of social work at Rhode Island College, has numerous publications and has lectured extensively nationally and internationally on the subjects of professional ethics and professional malpractice and liability. He also chaired the national task force that developed the code of ethics adopted by the National Association of Social Workers in 1996. Haig, director of Haig & Associates Consulting Firm, is a consultant and trainer throughout New England and nationally for human service and health care organizations on cultural competency, minority issues, HIV/AIDS, organizational development, and other health care issues. The instructional format will include lectures, group discussions, case presentations, and panel discussion. Continuing education credits have been approved for nursing, nursing home administration, medicine, pharmacy and social work (diversity and ethics). Other health care professionals are welcome to attend. The Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center, located at the University of Rhode Island, offers a Certificate in Interdisciplinary Practice in Geriatrics upon completion of Workshops I-V and Advanced Practice Seminars I and II. These programs do not need to be taken in sequence. The center is a consortium of the URI Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy and Human Science and Services, Rhode Island College School of Social Work, Brown University School of Medicine, and Aging 2000. The mission of the center is to improve knowledge and skills in geriatrics and gerontology among health care providers to better meet the needs of the growing elderly population.
