: Hawaii-A Living Laboratory Wakefield eighth grader David Mangiante will join Bob Ballard during The second week of the expedition as a Student Argonaut. Narragansett, R.I. — January 10, 2001 — Hawaii, known for its awe-inspiring volcanoes, its unique terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and its rich cultural histoy, is the setting for the 2001 JASON Project: Hawaii-A Living Laboratory. As Dr. Robert Ballard and his team of scientists and Student Argonauts explore these exotic and diverse islands, every student in Rhode Island will have the opportunity to view the expedition either live at the URI Bay Campus or over local cable channels. The JASON Project broadcasts will take place from January 29-February 9. The general public, scout troops and others are invited to view the live, interactive JASON broadcasts at the Coastal Institute Visitor Center Auditorium each Monday through Friday, January 29-February 2 and February 5-9, at 2:15 and 3:45 p.m. On Saturday, February 3, live broadcasts are at 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. and 12:45, 2:15, and 3:45 p.m. The 9:45, 11:15 and 12:45 shows during the week are reserved for school groups. Tickets are just $1 per person. Preregistration is required and will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. During the second week of the expedition David Mangiante of Wakefield will join the science team as a Student Argonaut. One of 22 Student Argonauts chosen from many countries around the world, Mangiante is an eighth grade honors student at the Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich. He enjoys mountain climbing, rock climbing, and rappelling. Mangiante is also involved in Boy Scouts, the South County Children’s Theater and the South County Soccer Travel Team. The live broadcasts of the JASON Project expedition will be carried on Cox Cable Monday through Friday of both weeks from 12-1 p.m. daily. Westerly, Richmond, Hopkinton and Charlestown residents can view the broadcasts on Cox Cable channel 16. All other Rhode Island communities serviced by Cox can view the expedition on Cox 3. JASON XII, led by JASON Project founder and URI Graduate School of Oceanography alumnus Dr. Robert Ballard, will travel to Hawaii to investigate volcanoes both on the land and in the sea and compare volcanic events here on Earth with others througout the solar system. Ballard and a team of researchers and Student Argonauts will explore this group of isolated islands, shaped by 30 million years of volcanism, which offer one of the best representations of Earth’s geologic and biologic forces. They will also trace the migration paths of the diverse peoples who settled these islands, and explore the fascinating cultural tapestry that is modern Hawaii.
