URI Clearinghouse for Volunteers sponsors Penny Drive

Kingston, R.I. — Feb. 28, 2001 — The University of Rhode Island Clearinghouse for Volunteers is sponsoring its third annual Penny Drive on its Kingston Campus through March 23. The event will benefit the Women’s Resource Center of South County. The goal is to exceed last year’s total of $1,300. The money raised will go to two of the local homeless shelters, the WARM Shelter and the Welcome House. The Clearinghouse for Volunteers is an organization that provides volunteer and community service experience with different agencies throughout Rhode Island. The Clearinghouse also assists with the Blood Drive at URI held four times during the school year in conjunction with the Rhode Island Blood Center. The Clearinghouse’s main focus is on children, feeding the hungry, homelessness and elderly. The Woman’s Resource Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to “creating a future free from violence.” It provides educational programs, such as after-school programs, and a network of support services to victims of domestic abuse and violence. Those interested in participating in the Penny Drive or any other Clearinghouse for Volunteers program may call The Clearinghouse for Volunteers at 874-2568 or may email at cfv@etal.uri.edu. Penny Jars will be brought to interested offices. For Information: Kelly Thomas, 874-2568, Merisa Selby, 874-2116
