KINGSTON, R.I. — February 23, 2001 — Scott Molloy, associate professor of Labor and Industrial Relations at the University of Rhode Island, will speak on Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m. at the University Club on Upper College Road at URI. The Center for The Humanities at URI is sponsoring Molloy’s lecture “Joseph Banigan and the Rhode Island Industry.” The lecture will address research Molloy conducted during his tenure at The Center for The Humanities. URI’s Center for The Humanities was founded in 1994 to foster independent inquiry, analysis and interpretation of humanities in research and teaching. It has honored two members of URI’s faculty every year for outstanding teaching in the humanities by naming them fellows. Molloy was named a faculty fellow in 1998-1999. Molloy has been involved in labor history for more than 20 years. While driving buses for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, he became a business agent for the transit union and received his doctorate from Providence College. Throughout the years, Molloy has collected many items from labor unions beginning with his union pin. More than 10,000 artifacts from his collection can be found on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. He began teaching at URI in 1986 as a summer lecturer. He has made history by being the first to win the Excellence in Education Award presented by the Industrial Relations Research Association. He was also the recipient of the URI Foundation’s Teaching Excellence Award in 1995. Molloy founded the Rhode Island Labor History Society in 1987 and served as its president for 11 years. He has also served as the president of the Rhode Island chapter of the Industrial Research Relations Association. He has published many articles and books about labor, industrial and transit history.
