at URI’s Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education PROVIDENCE, R.I. — March 28, 2001 — What do you do with a BGS (Bachelor’s of General Studies) degree? What does a communications degree say? How about an English degree? Do you need a graduate degree? The University of Rhode Island Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education will hold a “Career Networking Evening” on Thursday, April 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the College’s Paff Auditorium. The college is located at 80 Washington St., Providence. Anyone who has thought about returning to school or changing careers is invited. There is no charge. The event is co-sponsored by the Alumni Association and Student Services. Four ASF-CCE alumni will sit on a panel and share their successes and thoughts with current students and others. A question and answer period will follow. There will also be time to talk and network with the alums. Refreshments will be available. Here’s a look at the panelists: o Leisa Young of Cranston graduated with a BGS in 1986. She earned a master’s degree in agency counseling from Rhode Island College. Leisa coordinates the Advising and Counseling Office at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Providence Campus. For the past 11 years, she has also been a group facilitator for two women’s support groups. Leisa has taught at both ASF-CCE and CCRI. o John Flaherty of Slatersville graduated with a speech communications degree in 1987. John is vice president of convention sales and marketing for the Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is responsible for the operation of a six-person sales staff and a $1-million destination marketing budget aimed at attracting group meeting business to Greater Providence. He has increased bookings by 105 percent, related room nights by 55 percent and exhibit space rental by 29 percent. o Carol Chevalier of North Providence graduated with a degree in English and secondary education in 1984. She holds a master’s of science from URI’s Marriage and Family Therapy Program. Carol was promoted to manager of succession planning at the Mashantucket Pequot Academy last fall. Prior to that, she was manager of employee training for three years. She has also been a therapist in private and agency practices. o Carol Corwin of Cranston graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1984. Last year, she was named senior commercial real estate portfolio manager, vice president by FleetBoston Financial Group in Providence where she manages the day-to-day credit process. Prior to her appointment, Carol was community development officer for Fleet, acting as a liaison between the bank and community non-profit groups throughout the state, leading community development and reinvestment initiatives. Active in the community, Carol sits on numerous boards and has received many honors for her work. Christine Johnston, class of 1999, will serve as moderator. Anne Calderella, acting director of Student Services, will comment on the career search process.
