Narragansett, R.I. — March 12, 2001 — Have you ever wondered what goes on at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography’s (GSO) Narragansett Bay Campus? What do oceanographic research scientists do in their laboratories and what kinds of research do they conduct? The public is invited to take a peek into the workings of a scientific research institution during a tour of the Bay Campus on Saturday, March 24, from 9-11 a.m. Leading the tour will be GSO Assistant Dean Kenneth Hinga who will explain the specialized equipment and diverse research activities undertaken by GSO oceanographers. The tour will include the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory, the Marine Aquarium facility, the Marine Geological Samples Laboratory, the outdoor mesocosms, the Coastal Institute Building, and many of the historic sites on the Bay Campus. Sponsored by URI Friends of Oceanography, the tour will begin at 9 a.m. at the Coastal Institute Building. The fee is $2 for members of Friends of Oceanography and $5 for non-members. Established in 1985 to support and promote the activities of the URI Graduate School of Oceanography, Friends of Oceanography informs and educates the membership and the general public about the scientific, technological, and environmental research that takes place at GSO.
