for school groups Popular field trip to URI’s greenhouses fills up fast KINGSTON, R.I. — April 27, 2001 — Registration for fall 2001 has begun for the University of Rhode Island’s Learning Landscape Environmental Education program, a popular field trip to the URI gardens and greenhouses for elementary school classes. During two-hour Learning Landscape lessons, children in grades K-6 explore the soils, water, plants and wildlife of the Rhode Island environment through hands-on activities. They compare the fur of an opossum and squirrel, sieve soil to study the particles, feel composting worms squiggle about on their hands, and taste and smell the herbs and vegetables grown in the URI gardens. The Learning Landscape Environmental Education program is taught by URI staff, student volunteers, and Master Gardeners.
