Students Entering Grades 4 and 5 Can Still Sign Up for URI Oceanography Day Camp

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — May 9, 2001 — There is still time for budding marine scientists in grades 4 and 5 to sign up for Oceanography Explorer Day Camp at the Graduate School of Oceanography’s Narragansett Bay Campus. Campers can choose from two sessions, the first running from July 2-6 (excluding July 4 holiday) and the second from August 7-10. Camps meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday (except the first session which meets on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). Designed with the interests of the age group in mind, instructors have a variety of exciting and educational activities planned while campers explore barrier beaches, salt ponds, rocky shores, and salt marshes. URI Marine Outreach Scientists Elizabeth Gibbs and Bert Dubois, both experienced science teachers and camp instructors, have developed a curriculum that will introduce campers to marine science in a fun, hands-on way. In addition to shoreline-based activities, a trip aboard a coastal vessel is also planned for campers to discover what’s going on beneath the ocean’s surface. Enrollment in Oceanography Explorer Day Camp sessions is limited to ensure high-level supervision and interaction with instructors. The cost is $280 per child, which includes a camp t-shirt, all classroom and lab materials, and daily transportation to field trip sites in Rhode Island. Campers are expected to bring their own lunch. For more information or to register, call the Narragansett Bay Classroom at the URI Office of Marine Programs, 401-874-6211.
