Peace Camp planned for children ages 10-13 KINGSTON, R.I. — June 19, 2001 — Andrew Young, a top aide to Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement, will speak at the International Conference for Nonviolence to be held at the University of Rhode Island from Aug. 11 to 15. “Violence has been our past as a global society. Nonviolence needs to be our future,” says conference chair Dr. Bernard LaFayette, scholar-in-residence at URI and director of URI’s Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies. Young, a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Georgia congressman, now chairs the Atlanta-based GoodWorks International and teaches public affairs at Georgia State University. Young is just one of the leaders in the practice of nonviolence from around the country and the world who will come to URI to share their knowledge and successes. A partial list of workshop leaders include Dr. C. T. Vivian, Center for Democratic Renewal, USA; Dr. N. Radhakrishman, Gandhi Smriti & Harshal Samitit, New Dehli, India; Luis Javier Botero, Global Lean, of Colombia the Rev. Joseph Tshawane of Johannesburg, South Africa; and Dr.Virgil Woods, pastor of Pond Street Baptist Church, Providence. The skill-building conference, designed for educators, human resource managers, social workers, counselors, parents, law enforcement and correction officers, clergy, nonviolence practitioners and others, will explore peaceful and nonviolent methods for preventing and reducing conflict. The conference will provide information for those interested in implementing nonviolence education and training programs and offer support to those interested in helping develop centers of nonviolence in regions around the world. Peace Camp for children A Peace Camp, open to children ages 10 to 13 will be held in conjunction with the conference from August 13 to 15. Activities include ceramic peace tiles, marionette making, storytelling, non-competitive games, drumming, song writing, and nonviolence training by fifth graders at Wakefield Elementary School. Early registration is advisable. A special discounted $100 registration fee is available prior to July 13 for local clergy, educators, law enforcement, and city/state government agents who commute to campus. The $25 fee for children attending the Peace Camp includes all materials and activities. Teachers will be given the option to earn Continuing Education Units.
