URI launches Alumni Family Camp

KINGSTON, R.I. — June 19, 2001 — Want to have some outdoor fun in beautiful South County this year? Wish you could spend time with your kids or grandkids without spending big money on a hotel and meals? Then the University of Rhode Island’s Alumni Camp is for you. The weekend camp runs from July 27 through July 29 on the Kingston Campus. Registration deadline is July 1 Activities are geared to adults and children, 8 to 12 years old, including a tour aboard the URI Research vessel Cap’n Bert, a Kingston Chamber Music Festival concert, a half-day fishing trip out of Galilee or a day at the beach and kite-flying lessons and demonstrations. “This program is part of our effort to bring families, parents and their children, grandparents and grandchildren to campus for a variety of activities,” said Jessie Kenyon, URI assistant director of Alumni Relations. “This is our first getaway for families.” The overnight camp costs $185 per person and includes three days of activities and overnight accommodations in Heathman Hall residence suites, three breakfasts, three lunches and dinner on Saturday night. There is also a day camp option with prices ranging from $40 per person to $75 per person depending on the day or days families select. For day campers, lunch is included in the daily fee, and the dinner and concert on Saturday night are optional. The highlight of Friday’s events is a bus trip to Wickford for a ride aboard the Cap’n Bert, the 51-foot research vessel captained by Tom Plunkett. “We expect this will be a very hands-on tour, with kids getting the chance to work with the research crew,” Kenyon said. “It will be a little scenic for adults with a tour of the bay, and it will be a little adventure for the kids.” Those who don’t want to take the boat trip can tour historic and scenic Wickford. Saturday’s activities include free time in the Memorial Union game room, a half-day fishing excursion aboard the Seven B’s or an afternoon of relaxation at Salty Brine or Roger Wheeler State beaches. The day concludes with dinner and a concert as part of the Kingston Chamber Music Festival. On Sunday, campers will enjoy swimming in the Tootell Aquatic Center. There will also diving instructions and demonstrations. Then there is a stop at the Wakefield Rotary’s Hot Air Balloon Festival, followed by kite flying lessons given by the High Flyers Flight Co.
