GLOBAL SPECTRUM NAMES TERRY BUTLER GENERAL MANAGER
AT UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND’S NEW CONVOCATION CENTER
8,000-SEAT ARENA SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN SUMMER 2002
KINGSTON, Rhode Island, July 27, 2001 – Global Spectrum has named Terry Butler as general manager of the new University of Rhode Island Convocation Center and the ice arena, now under construction on the University’s Kingston Campus. The 8,000-seat, multi purpose arena and 2,500-seat ice facility will be open in the summer of 2002. The Convocation Center will be the new home of the University of Rhode Island Rams men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Prior to the Convocation Center’s opening, Butler will work closely with officials of the University of Rhode Island to oversee the construction, operations and hiring of a staff. Upon opening, Butler will book all events, oversee all of the arena’s marketing, promotion, advertising, and work closely with the University to maximize activity at both facilities. He will act as the main liaison between the University of Rhode Island and Global Spectrum’s corporate support.
“Terry Butler has an extensive background in the operations of University facilities,” said Global Spectrum President Michel F. Sauers. “He will use his experience and industry contacts to maximize the Convocation Center’s schedule of sports and entertainment events.”

Beagle, URI vice president for University Advancement. “Terry brings a wealth of experience and we are delighted that he will be working with our university and athletics staff.”
“Both Global Spectrum and the University agreed that Terry Butler met all of the criteria; pre-opening and event booking experience, a strong sales and marketing orientation, and a successful background in managing both university arenas and ice rinks,” said Frank E. The $66 million Convocation Center and ice arena facility are scheduled to open in summer of 2002 and replace Keaney Gymnasium, which was designed many years ago for a student body of 2,200. The University of Rhode Island currently enrolls about 10,700 undergraduates and 3,600 graduate students.
Prior to his new position, Butler was Arena Manager at the University of South Alabama’s Mitchell Center in Mobile since l999, where he oversaw the daily scheduling of the events, including concerts, family and trade shows, as well as university programming. He supervised the arena staff components, including marketing, ticket office, production, technical and event staff. He also acted as the liaison between the facility and the University of South Alabama.
Prior to working at the University of South Alabama, Butler held a similar position as arena director at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga from l994-99. He was also associate athletic director at East Stroudsburg University from l992-93 and assistant athletic director for facilities and operations at the University of Massachusetts at Boston from l986 through l991. As Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations at University of Massachusetts, Butler additionally acted as rink manager, scheduling over 1,200 hours annually to outside community organizations. As a result, the rink’s rental income increased by more than 30-percent.
Butler graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports administration from St. Thomas University, Miami, Florida, and received a master of education in sports management from East Stroudsburg University. He is a member of International Association of Assembly Members National Membership Committee, District V Alabama State Representative and a graduate of the IAAM Public Assembly Facility Management School (Oglebay).
