Friends of Oceanography Offers Field Trip to Identify Wild Mushrooms

Narragansett, R.I .– August 22, 2001 — Finding fungi can be fun, and fall is the ideal time to enjoy identifying wild mushrooms while walking along the trails at URI’s W. Alton Jones Campus. Friends of Oceanography will host a field trip that should be perfect for locating mushrooms after this year’s rainy, damp New England summer.

On Wednesday, September 19, at 1 p.m. University of Rhode Island botany professor emeritus Dr. Roger Goos will take participants on a guided walk through the Netty Jones Nature Preserve on the W. Alton Jones Campus in West Greenwich. The 2-hour walk will not focus on finding edible mushrooms, but will show participants ways to identify fungi from a biological perspective.

Participants will meet at the Netty Jones Nature Preserve at 1 p.m. Walkers are encouraged to wear appropriate shoes for walking on trails.

Cost for the walk is $2 for members of Friends of Oceanography and $5 for non-members. Preregistration by September 14 is required. For information or registration, call 874-6602.
Dr. Roger Goos, a mycologist (a botanist who studies fungi) specializing in Helicosporae, received his B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
