KINGSTON, R.I. — Aug. 30, 2001 — Curious about the scenic campus and stately granite buildings of the University of Rhode Islands Kingston Campus? Familiar with the University but just want to check out a building location or the layout of a residence hall? Or perhaps youre interested in visiting URI’s Learning Landscape gardens to select a new kind of flower for your garden? Now, thanks to a new URI web site offering virtual tours, you can do all this without leaving home.
The URI Virtual Tour features Quick Time video, multimedia presentations, maps, and more. It was created as a recruiting tool through a collaborative effort with the Office of the Webmaster, the Admissions Office and Information and Instructional Technology Services.
The virtual tour of the campus showcases text and pictures of academic buildings, residence halls, the library, athletic buildings and more. Real URI tour guides, represented by pictures, videos, and sound, lead you down the virtual path, offering descriptions of the buildings and departments. The web site also offers Quick Time Virtual Reality where you can view the URI quadrangle, the library, and the gardens of URI’s Learning Landscape, by simply moving your mouse across the screen. In the gardens, you can move through the paths and click on specific flowers and species to learn more about them. Another popular part of the web site is the multimedia video clips of students explaining why they chose URI.
After taking the virtual tour, visitors can connect on other sites with news and information about the University, Alumni, Development and more.
For example, surf over to the URI Department of Communications/News Bureau web site at www.news.uri.edu to check out news and events happening on the real brick and mortar campus. Current news releases and archives of old releases are available for viewing and searching on this site, as is a listing of Speakers Bureau topics, and video clips from recent events. There is even an on-line version of The University Pacer, with issues dating back to April 1995.
The University-wide Calendar of Events, which is searchable by event and date, is updated daily with student activities, lectures, concerts, exhibits, sports, theatre performances, and more.
Briefings of the latest news at URI can also be delivered right to your e-mail account by signing up for the weekly Newsline listserve.
The Division of University Advancement and the URI Alumni Association have also made it easier for the more than 70,000 URI graduates living in Rhode Island and beyond to keep in touch with their alma mater. At www.advance.uri.edu, alumni and friends find valuable information on the status of fundraising efforts and accomplishments made on a wide variety of campaigns and the latest in photos of construction projects like the Convocation Center. At advance.uri.edu/alumni/, alumni can check up on old classmates, check out upcoming chapter events, sign-up for e-mail updates, and more.
