KINGSTON, RI — August 3, 2001 — Seven students from the University of Rhode Island Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) program recently completed Camp Challenge. Camp Challenge is a five-week paid internship which students attend between their sophomore and junior years. The camp’s adventurous and challenging training attracts students from across the country to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where they learn about themselves and the Army. During the five-week course of instruction, students were given numerous leadership responsibilities that taught them how to be a team player, solve complex problems, and communicate ideas to other members of the team. While at camp, students validate or compete for scholarships valued at more than $18,000 per year. There is no obligation for the students who attend this internship to serve in the Army. However, most students elect to enroll in the ROTC program and obtain a commission as a second lieutenant upon graduation.
