Activities planned in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

The University of Rhode Island Multicultural Center, Office of the Chaplains, the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, and the Great Performances Series have teamed-up to offer several activities this month in honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For additional information, call 401-874-5829.

Events to be held include:

Philadanco Monday, Jan. 28, 8 p.m. Fine Arts Center. URI’s Great Performances Series starts the spring semester with Messages from the Heart by the Philadelphia Dance Compa-ny, aka Philadanco, an ensemble of multiethnic dancers known for their innovative choreography that fuses ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and West-African influences. Tickets are $20 for general audiences, $15 staff, $12 seniors, and $5 students. For tickets call 401-874-2627.

Town Meeting Tuesday, Jan. 29, 7 p.m. Catholic Student Center, Kingston Campus
“Our Response to the Tragedy of September 11th 2001 Nonviolence or Violence?” with Professors Kailash Mohapatra and Marc Genest, Political Science; Tom Morin, Languages; and Lynn Derbyshire, Communication Studies. Free and open to the public.

Unity Lunch Wednesday, Jan. 30, Noon-1:30 p.m. Multicultural Center, Hardge Forum. Keynote speech by URI Protestant Chaplain Rev. Hylanie Chan-Williams and readings of URI’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest winning papers on: “How should we respond to the tragedy of September 11th? Violence or Nonviolence?”

Civil Rights Sing-a-long Thursday, Jan. 31, Noon-1 p.m. Multicultural Center. A fun event with Communication Studies Professor Stephen Wood, Stephen Myles of the Counseling Center; and Psychology Professor Paul DeMesqiuta. Free and open to the public.
Peace and Harmony Meditation Friday, Feb. 1, Noon-1 p.m. Multicultural Center.
