The professors are among approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who have received Fulbright grants to lecture and conduct research abroad. (A similar number of foreign scholars, primarily researchers, have received awards to come to the U.S.).
URI faculty members who have been awarded a 2001-2002 Fulbright scholar grant are:
1) Mary C. Cappello of Providence, professor of English, is lecturing on creative writing and American cultural studies at the Moscow Literary Institute, Moscow, Russia from September 2001 to February 2002.
2) Lisa Harlow of Exeter, associate chair, Department of Psychology, is lecturing and researching elucidating quantitative science through multi-disciplinary curriculum, research and collaboration at York University, Toronto, Canada from September 2001 to June 2002.
3) Allison Petro of Kingston, instructor of English, is lecturing in TEFL and English for special purposes at Yaroslav the Wise Novgorod State University, Novgorod Velikii, Russia from September 2001 to July 2002.
4) Jean Walton of Providence, associate professor of English, is lecturing on literary modernism, critical and cultural theory, and film studies at the Moscow Literary Institute, Moscow, Russia from September 2001 to February 2002.
The U.S. Department of State sponsors the Fulbright Scholar Program, with additional funding provided by the participating governments and host institutions.
Colleges and universities are increasingly challenged to internationalize by developing and strengthening international programs and by adding a global, multicultural dimension to the traditional curriculum. The contributions of visiting and returning U.S. Fulbrighters can be instrumental in achieving these goals, according to the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, a private, nonprofit organization that manages the Fulbright senior scholar exchange.
