Looks at How Marine Mammals Perceive
Narragansett, R.I. — February 13, 2002 — The public is invited to attend a free Science for Breakfast Lecture, sponsored by Friends of Oceanography, to be held on Thursday, February 21, at 9 a.m. in the Coastal Institute Building on the URI Bay Campus. The lecture is part of a series featuring the research of URI Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) students.
The February 21 lecture, “Marine Mammal Cognition: How Marine Mammals Perceive” will be presented by biological oceanography graduate student Jennifer Miksis of Narragansett.
Miksis will give an overview of the mechanisms marine mammals use to perceive signals from their environment and from each other.
A native of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Miksis received a B.A. in biology from Harvard University and an M.S. from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Under the guidance of her major professors, Dr. Percy Donaghay, URI Graduate School of Oceanography, and Dr. Jim Miller, URI Department of Ocean Engineering, her research interests include marine mammal cognition and communication. She is working on her doctoral dissertation entitled “Manatee Response to Habitat Variations and Human Activity: The Effects of Physical Environment Covariates.

Friends of Oceanography is a community-based membership organization established in 1986 to support the educational and public programs of the URI Graduate School of Oceanography. Friends provides financial support of fellowships for GSO students, and other research, education, and outreach activities.
