KINGSTON, R.I. — February 19, 2002 — The University of Rhode Island’s Recreational Services kicked off the New Year with honors by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). The group designated the URI department’s web site as the “Featured Member” for the months of January and February. The web site can be found at www.uri.edu/athletics/recservices.

“The web site has been constructed to allow the University community and interested visitors to attain all the same information they would if they were to personally visit us,” said web site designer Peter Koutroumpis, coordinator of intramural sports.

In choosing URI as a featured member, the NIRSA recognized the web site for its information, design, and function. For example, the level of detail provided about the University’s award-winning aquatics programs was specifically cited, as well as the interactive element that allows students to update news about club and other sports. Power point presentations of various events and complete schedules for all activities at the center are included. The design features a simple format to accommodate a wide range of Internet speeds for ease of reading.

“It feels good to be recognized for the site. We worked so hard on trying to figure out the best way to get the information out. Our web site is visually appealing and serves the population well,” said Koutroumpis.
The NIRSA is a non-profit professional association dedicated to fostering the growth of quality recreational sports programs by providing for the continuing education and development of recreational sports professionals.
