Single mothers/head of households scholarships available at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. — March 25, 2002 –The Womens Studies Program at the University of Rhode Island is now accepting applications for Eleanor M. and Oscar M. Carlson Endowed Scholarships for Single Mothers for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Due to the generosity of the late Eleanor M. Carlson, the scholarship provides full in-state tuition and a book allowance to women who are single parents with one or more dependent children. They must be heads of households.

To be eligible to receive the scholarship, the applicant must be enrolled at or accepted by the University of Rhode Island for the 2002 fall semester. Students who are awarded scholarships may attend classes on URIs Kingston and/or Providence campuses. Students may register for either six to nine credits or be enrolled as full-time students. Previous recipients and applicants are eligible to reapply.

Preference will be given to those who meet one or more of the following criteria: candidates who have followed a non-traditional educational track, candidates who demonstrate financial need, candidates in good academic standing, Rhode Island residents, or candidates pursuing a major or minor in Womens Studies.

Applications are available in the Womens Studies Office, 315 Roosevelt Hall, Kingston, RI 02881, or may be obtained by calling 874-5150 and leaving a mailing address. The application deadline is May 1, 2002. It is expected that three or four scholarships will be awarded. Recipients will be notified by the end of June.
