urban landscape during April
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — March 13, 2002 — The University of Rhode Island Providence Campus Gallery will present the exhibit “Food for the Hungry! Shelter for the Homeless! Light For the Soul!” April 1 through 26. The exhibit is located in the first and second floor gallery of the campus, located at 80 Washington St.
The exhibit will feature works by David Baggarly of Providence, Anthony Tomaselli of Cranston and New York subway muralist Frank Leslie Hampton. The exhibit will also include work by Holly Burchett of Exeter, the late John Campopiano of Cranston, Gigi Colson and Benny Notorangelo, both of Woonsocket, and Mark Freedman, Susan Garland, Nancy Hart, all of Providence. Artwork by students from local schools, including several of the Alan Shawn Feinstein Hunger Brigade schools, will also be displayed. The works represent the effects of poverty and the problems of the urban environment but suggest how change can and should take place.
URI is home to the Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America. One of the primary goals of the center, which offers a hunger studies minor, is to develop lifelong anti-hunger advocates by giving students hands-on experience.
Performances by the URI Providence Campus/Providence Black Repertory Company SEEDS, a touring ensemble of middle school students from around the state presenting original poetry, will vocally punctuate the message of the exhibit on April 18 at noon in the Paff Auditorium.
Visitors are invited to bring a canned good to add to the canned good sculpture and/or financial donations for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit is closed Sundays. A Gallery Night Reception will be held April 18 from 5 to 9 p.m. For more information, call Steve Pennell, artist-in-residence, 277-5206.
