URI Providence Campus & Providence Black Repertory to spread ‘Seeds of Hope’
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — April 2, 2002 — The University of Rhode Island ‘s Providence Campus and The Providence Black Repertory Company announce the spring tour of SEEDS, a youth poetry and performance workshop throughout the community.
“Seeds of Hope, Voices of Change” is a program of original poetry by the Middle School Performance Troupe as well as performing the inspiring works by classic American poets to plant positive words, affirming hope in our community and our world.
The troupe will feature performances by Tessa Knight, 14, of Peace Dale, who attends South Kingstown High, Michaela Wood, 10 , of Providence who attends the Martin Luther King School, Riane Lewis, 12 and Stephani Lewis, 10; both of East Providence who attend Riverside Middle School.
“Seeds” is the brainchild by Dr. John McCray, vice provost of urban programs at the URI Providence Campus. McCray recognized the powerful impact that comes from writing and reciting and giving voice to positive ideas in the form of poetry.
The program began last fall as youth from the community were invited to join the workshop to learn techniques in writing and presenting original poetry as well as some classic American works by such notable poets as Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks. Working under the direction of local playwright /actress Nehassaiu DeGannes, the troupe performed a program of poetry inspired by the Civil Rights Movement as an affirmation against racism at the campus.
“Seeds of Hope, Voices of Change” is the first harvest out in the community by the troupe. There will be performances at local community centers and at Hasbro Childrens Hospital. Public performances will also take place on April 18t at noon in Paff Auditorium of the URI campus, located at 80 Washington St. on May 4 at 3 p.m. at the Providence Black Repertorys new theatre space at 276 Westminster St. For information, contact Steven Pennell 277-5206 or Elizabeth Kaiser 351-0353, ext. 5.
