to give lecture, take part in discussion at URI
KINGSTON, R.I. — October 9, 2002 — Sonja de Leeuw, professor of film and television at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, will visit the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston Campus on October 15 and 16. Her visit is sponsored by the URI Center for the Humanities, URI English Department and University Libraries.
De Leeuw will take part in a round table discussion on arts and public policies with six URI professors representing film studies, communications, English and art disciplines on Tuesday, October 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Galanti Lounge of the URI Library. Refreshments will be served.
De Leeuw will also give a free public lecture on Wednesday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kirk Cherry Auditorium. She will discuss how Dutch documentaries have taken many paths from the 1950s to the present going from a “pictorial” style tied to local landscapes to a plurality of styles registering an increasingly complex “Europe.” Her research travels these paths, which include how different strategies of telling stories and rendering social spaces not only helps “construct” identities, but also reflect changes in cultural policy by the state and its media infrastructure.
A major presence in European media, de Leeuw is a scholar of film and documentary. She is chair of the board of the Dutch Cultural Broadcasting Promotion Fund, the production agency for all Dutch film and documentary. She is a former Crown Member of the Netherlands Council for Culture for Film, which oversees the international Rotterdam Film and Amsterdam Documentary Film Festivals.
