Oct. 2-31, gallery reception with NBC10’s Frank Coletta 10/21

KINGSTON, RI — September 26, 2006 — The University of Rhode Island Feinstein Providence Campus Gallery will present an exhibit and events celebrating the Italian communities throughout Rhode Island. Called Abbondanza!, the exhibit will feature photographs, tools, musical instruments, and artifacts such as immigration documents, passports and official papers.

Free and open to the public, the exhibit runs Oct. 2-31. A Gallery Night reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 5 to 9 p.m. A special event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. with NBC 10’s Frank Coletta as MC and Opera Providence, followed by a special Waterfire.

The exhibit will have vignettes to illustrate and honor the rich Italian heritage and traditions in family, work, and community life and religious celebrations from each of the Italian communities in Rhode Island — from Woonsocket to Bristol to Westerly and of course Federal Hill, the North End, Knightsville and “The Lake.” The exhibit also features painting, sculpture and photographs by noted local Italian artists including Salvatore Mancini, Pricilla Cane, Angelo Rosatti, and Dominick Marcigliano.

The display focuses on everything from wine making, gardening and preserving, to occupations such as barbers, bakers, butchers, carpenters, farmers and stone masons, musicians, and more to show the many contributions made by Italians in Rhode Island. There is a video of interviews with Italian Americans from all parts of the state. The receptions will feature food, videos, opportunities to share stories, and strolling musicians.

The Providence Campus gallery is located at 80 Washington St. and is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed Sunday and holidays.

Abbondanza is presented with the support of NBC10, Cardi’s Furniture, AMICA, the URI Providence Campus Arts and Culture, and Student Government Boards.
