KINGSTON, R.I. – March 13, 2007 – British art historian Helen Langdon will present a slide lecture called Caravaggio: A Life in Art at the University of Rhode Island Kingston campus Thursday, April 12 at 4 p.m.

The presentation, which takes place in Cherry Auditorium in the Kirk Engineering building, 94 Upper College Road, is free and open to the public.

Langdon is the author of a biography of Caravaggio and has written books and essays on other artists, including Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa. She has lectured at universities and museums in Britain, Italy, Japan, and Australia. She was a visiting Fellow at the Getty Research Institute in 2006 and will be a Fellow at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven next month.

Caravaggio was one of the most fascinating painters in 17th Century Rome, according to Wendy Rowarth, chair of URI’s Department of Art and Art History. He has been celebrated and condemned for his violent and colorful life, as well as his sensuous paintings of youthful musicians and cardsharps, and dark, powerful religious paintings set in the world of the poor, the suffering, and the outcast.
