Bishop Hendricken takes home URI’s chemistry trophies (again)

Barrington High’s Margaret Tam wins scholarship playoff

KINGSTON, R.I.—June 23, 2008—The University of Rhode Island held its annual chemistry contest this May, attracting about 520 students from 19 schools in the state.

The hour-long, multiple-choice contest covers general chemistry and some organic chemistry. The contest has two divisions: Division I is composed of students who have had no more than one year of chemistry. Division II is composed of students who have had more than one year of chemistry. Each division has a team competition and an individual competition.

Bishop Hendricken, a perennial winner, again took home trophies. This year, the Warwick school won first place in both divisions. One of its students, Prasanth Somasundar, won first place in Division I’s individual competition.

David Percy, a student at Mt. Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, broke the Hendricken winning streak, by snagging first place in Division II’s individual competition.

The 30 top scorers, who were juniors and lived in Rhode Island, were invited back to campus on June 11 for a playoff contest. Margaret Tam, a student at Barrington High School, took top place. IF she applies to URI, she will be offered a full four-year scholarship to URI.
