KINGSTON, R.I. — June 3, 2010 — Teams from Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick and East Greenwich High School each took home first-place trophies in separate divisions during Chemistry Day at the University of Rhode Island on May 18.
URI has offered the contest to Rhode Island high school students every year since 1924. About 400 students from 15 high schools competed in this year’s competition.
The competition consists of a 45-question, multiple-choice exam, which must be completed in an hour. Prizes are awarded to the top team and top three individuals in each of two divisions. Students with less than one full year of high school chemistry compete in Division 1 while students with more than one year of high school chemistry compete in Division II.
The team competition was held in URI’s Edwards Auditorium. Students who wished to take the test as individual competitors did so in URI’s Chafee Social Science Center.

Hendricken student Ryan Sutyla took the first-prize trophy in the division’s individual competition.
The East Greenwich High School team took first place in the Division II competition. Team members were (front row from left) Ryan Legran, Julia Stevens, Jessica Lau, Michael Murphy and (back row from left) Thomas Paradise, Robert Lusi, Joshua Leveillee, and Han Xu.
Barrington High School student Stephen Lamontagne took the trophy in the individual competition.
