KINGSTON, R.I. – Nov. 6, 2013 – Plagiarizing in the news business, the need for editing of online copy, and how reporters can create their own websites are the focus of panel discussions for Journalism Day at the University of Rhode Island. The annual event will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Ballroom at Memorial Union on the Kingston campus.

A panel discussion “Stealing the News? The Ethics of Aggregation” will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Panelists are Dan McGowan, digital reporter at WPRI-TV; Sue Areson, deputy executive editor at The Providence Journal; Joshua Fenton, founder of GoLocalProv.com; and Michelle Smith, a reporter for the Associated Press. The moderator is URI Associate Journalism Professor Barbara Meagher.

“Ooops: Why Online News Needs Editing’” is the topic for a talk from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Panelists are Sheila Mullowney, the editor of The Newport Daily News; Maria Caporizzo, assistant managing editor, multiplatform, at The Providence Journal; John Howell, editor and publisher of the Warwick Beacon; and Galen Moore, web editor for the Boston Business Journal. The moderator is John Pantalone, assistant professor and chair of URI’s Department of Journalism.

The final discussion is “Can’t Find a Job? Create Your Own” from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Speakers are Liz Boardman, managing editor of Independent Newspapers; Jim Hummel, former television and newspaper reporter and founder of TheHummelReport.com; and Mark Murphy, editor of the Providence Business News.
