URI public relations students win excellence awards from Harrington School of Communication and Media

KINGSTON, R.I., March 24, 2015 – Public relations students at the University of Rhode Island are being honored by the Harrington School of Communication and Media for their outstanding work.

The awards are given every year to students who “capture the essence of achievement.” A ceremony with the students will start at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 1 in the Alumni Center, 73 Upper College Road, on the Kingston campus.

The recipients are: Sergio Suhett, of North Kingstown, for leadership; Victoria Vichroski, of East Providence, for most innovative; Lauren Foley, of South Kingstown, for campus involvement; Laura Shubel, of East Greenwich, for outstanding internship experience; William Matson V, of Wakefield, for outstanding internship experience; and Suhett, Kimberly DeLande, of East Providence, Kylie Rice, of Bridegwater, N.J., and David St. Amant, of Warwick, for impact, based on their work with URI’s #MakeYourGreenCount social media campaign.

The Harrington School encourages students to make a difference in global and local communities. “Our school’s mission is to work together to use the power of communication and information to make a difference in the world,” said Adam Roth, interim director of the Harrington School. “I applaud the achievements of our students and faculty who are fulfilling this mission every day.”

URI graduate and honorary chairwoman, Kathleen Slocum, associate consultant public relations at Liberty Mutual Insurance, says it’s crucial to provide students with the skills needed in the local and global community.

“The University’s public relations program helped lay the foundation for many key skills I use in my career today,” said Slocum. “As a former student, I’m honored to take part in a ceremony that recognizes these students for their academic achievements.”
