URI Music Department to offer a little bit of everything this holiday season

Brass quintet, choirs, Symphony Orchestra and more

KINGSTON, R.I.- November 30, 2017- Do you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the fast approaching holiday season? Maybe you need to get your mind off finals for a little bit.

The URI Department of Music has the antidote as it offers shows for everyone, ranging from performance by various chamber ensembles to the University Choir. All events will be held in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston, R.I.

The first opportunity to hear what the music department has to offer comes on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Coordinated by Juliet Lai, Adam Levin and Cathryn Cummings, the URI Chamber Ensembles will present music by Piazzolla, Nelhybel, Rimsky-Korsakov and Hindemith. The brass quintet, horn quartet, clarinet ensembles and guitar ensemble will perform. Admission to this show is free.

On Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. the University Chorus, directed by Audrey Cardany, will present a concert that features Sarah Quartel’s evocative Snow Angel, which explores themes of love, rebirth, and beauty through the eyes of children and the heavenly army of angels that watch over them, yearning to make a difference to their lives. The group is known for exploring interesting repertoire written for larger chorus from various times and nationalities. General admission tickets are $12, tickets for students and seniors 60 and older are $7, and children 12 and under can attend for free.

“The several works we are performing celebrate the power of music,” said Audrey Cardany, associate professor in the Department of Music. “Snow Angel is a multi-movement work about the power of children’s voices in our world. This piece features the Music Department’s guest artist teacher, Theodore Mook on cello and two percussionists. In addition to the richness the cello brings to the choral sounds, the five movements are linked together with narratives of three angels that tell a story of gathering light and living in a world knowing you are loved. It’s the perfect piece for the season.”

If you missed the URI Jazz Big Band’s rave performances at the Newport Jazz Festival or the New York City’s Lincoln Center Spring Concert Series, there is one more opportunity to hear the group play on Thursday, Dec. 7 from 8 to 10 p.m. General admission tickets are $12, tickets for students and seniors 60 and older are $7, and children 12 and under can attend for free.

Finally, on Saturday, Dec. 9 the URI Symphony Orchestra and the URI Concert Choir, directed by Ann Danis and Mark Conley in joint session, will present their annual Holiday Concert from 8 to 10 p.m. General admission tickets are $12, tickets for students and seniors 60 and older are $7, and children 12 and under can attend for free.
