URI’s Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies to honor Gandhi essayists at May 4 Statehouse ceremony

KINGSTON, R.I. – April 19, 2018 – The University of Rhode Island’s Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies will honor the winners of its 8th Annual Gandhi Essay Contest during ceremonies at the Statehouse on May 4 at 5 p.m.

Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “My life is my message,” served as an essay prompt for this year’s 8th grade Gandhi Essay Contest, which is sponsored by the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies.

Seventy-six students from 19 different schools submitted entries this year. They were encouraged by their teachers to celebrate the life of Gandhi and to think critically about his lessons of peaceful tolerance and nonviolence.

Since 2010, more than 1,000 students have submitted essays based on quotes from Gandhi’s work and life. All Rhode Island 8th graders were eligible to participate in this educational contest. Judges are currently scoring the essays to determine the winners.

Additional information on the Gandhi essay contest can be found at the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies or by calling 401-874-2875.

URI’s Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies advocates the teachings and lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi through education and training in peaceful alternatives to violent conflicts.
