KINGSTON, R.I., Nov. 13, 2018 — The University of Rhode Island and its alumni have a rooting interest in the outcome of tonight’s episode of “The Voice.” Steve Memmolo of Boston, a 2006 URI alumnus, will learn if he has been chosen as one of a dozen finalists during the show, which airs at 8 p.m. on NBC.

After his successful blind audition with a soulful rendition of “Spooky” by the Classics IV last month, Memmolo joined the team of coach Adam Levine, lead singer of the band Maroon 5. On Monday, he advanced to become one of 24 finalists, singing “More Today Than Yesterday” by Spiral Starecase.

Since Monday’s show, Americans across the nation began voting on which of the remaining 24 contestants will advance. America’s votes will decide the top two artists on each team, and then each of the four celebrity coaches will choose a third artist to continue on to the live shows next week. The lucky singers learn their fate tonight.

According to his bio on the show’s website, Memmolo’s father put the musical bug in his ear when he was a young child by playing Frank Sinatra and always supported his son’s musical ambitions. When Memmolo was a 20-year-old communications student at URI, his father was killed in an accident, and Memmolo decided to start a band to help him through that difficult time.

“I consider Rhode Island my second home and an integral part of my early days as a growing musician. I formed my first band (Stash) with original members Mike Murray and Pani Verma while living down in beautiful Narragansett in a rental house,” Memmolo said by email Tuesday. “I really loved my time there… all five years that it took — ha, ha.”

Today, Memmolo, 35, leads his own party band in Boston called Classic Yellow, and in addition to music, performs improv comedy once a week.
