Aug. 3, 2023

The University is saddened to learn of the passing of Professor George Veyera. He died peacefully in his sleep at home Thursday, July 27.

A 1978 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, George returned to URI as an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering in 1988. He was named associate professor in 1992 and later professor in 2002. He served as department chair from 2002 to 2005 and as associate dean of engineering and student affairs from 2007 to 2015. He was also the faculty mentor to students in civil and environmental engineering since 2015.

As a professor, George was known to take great interest in the success of his students with a dynamic teaching style. Later, as associate dean, he continued this love for supporting young engineers in their efforts to thrive at URI, and was instrumental in the development of the URI Engineering Living Learning Community.

As a researcher, George studied geomechanics, geotechnical engineering, blast-induced liquefaction, soil dynamics, and geosynthetic materials.

He will be missed by his URI students and colleagues.

The family will hold a small gathering of friends and family per his wishes. Condolences can be shared with George’s son Bryan at bryan_veyera@uri.edu.
