HURRICANE LEE — Update 1

Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023; 4 p.m.

The University of Rhode Island is closely monitoring Hurricane Lee, which currently is located approximately 1,000 miles south of Rhode Island. Keeping the University community safe and informed are top priorities as we continue to track the progress of this storm.

At this time, there are no storm-related changes to University operations.

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Hazard Message indicating a high risk for dangerous rip currents for Washington and Newport counties, and Block Island, from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening, with the likelihood that hazardous surf conditions could extend through at least Friday. The University’s Office of Emergency Management recommends that community members avoid swimming and maintain a safe distance from shorelines during hazardous conditions.

Many beaches in Rhode Island have concluded their seasons and may not have lifeguards on duty. Rip currents can overwhelm even seasoned swimmers. The National Weather Service advises that if you are caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

There is a 10-20% chance of Rhode Island experiencing tropical-storm-force winds late this week. If Hurricane Lee continues on the current forecast track, the earliest anticipated tropical storm impacts to the area would begin Friday evening. The path and progress of the storm may change, and community members should continue to monitor local forecasts.

The University will continue to actively monitor and assess the situation and is prepared to take additional action should it become necessary.
