Sept. 22, 2023

The University of Rhode Island is saddened to learn of the Aug. 31 passing of Elizabeth “Billie” Connors. Professor Connors began her time at the University as director of the URI Speech and Hearing Center in 1986, was named a clinical assistant professor in 1998, and retired from both roles in 2022.

During her tenure, Professor Connors was dedicated to supporting undergraduate and graduate students as they pursued their degrees in communicative disorders and speech and language pathology. She worked tirelessly to acquire and maintain clinical placement relationships throughout the community and made sure that students were on course and landed in clinical placements matched to their interests and abilities. An educator and an ambassador, Professor Connors expanded and enhanced the curriculum while broadening the University’s hearing and speech services to clients of all ages.

In 2006, Professor Connors received URI’s Administrative Excellence Award from the URI Foundation. The announcement said that as clinic director for the Department of Communicative Disorders, Professor Connors of South Kingstown was always willing to lend an ear to a steady stream of students, colleagues, and clients. She showed the URI community how a job could be done efficiently, effectively, and with a smile.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, she was a beloved friend and colleague to those within her department. Her warm personality and unwavering support made her a cherished member of the URI community. She will forever be remembered for her love for her cats and her impeccable fashion sense. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
