Cybersecurity Awareness: Keep software up to date

Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Week 3

Oct. 16, 2023

Welcome to week three of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This week we will focus on the importance of keeping software up to date.

One of the easiest ways to keep your information secure is to keep your software and apps updated. If you see a software update notification, act promptly. Keep these four tips in mind when it comes to software and apps:

Update often: When updates become available, install them. These updates fix general software problems and provide new security patches. You can be sure hackers are always looking for new ways to get to your data through software, so updating your software is an effortless way to stay a step ahead.

Get it from the source: When downloading a software update, only get it from the company that created it. Never use hacked, pirated or unlicensed versions of software (even if your friend gave it to you). These often contain malware and cause more problems than they solve.

Make it automatic: Software from legitimate companies usually provides an option to update your software automatically. When there is an update available, it gives a reminder so you can easily start the process. If you cannot automatically update it, remind yourself to check for updates regularly.

Watch for fakes: Beware of pop-up windows when visiting a website that urgently asks you to download something or fill out a form. These are always fake and should not be followed.

Now take this week’s quiz and see what you’ve learned!

Also, for students, security awareness training is available. Click here to access the education platform.
