URI Schmidt Center hosts 24th Annual Labor Arbitration Conference Nov. 6 in Newport

KINGSTON, R.I. – Nov. 2, 2023 – The University of Rhode Island Schmidt Center for Labor Relations and Human Resources in conjunction with the New England National Academy of Arbitrators will foster a dynamic exchange of ideas and insights at the 24th Annual Labor Arbitration Conference, which takes place Nov. 5 and 6 at the scenic Newport Marriott in Newport.

The event will draw over 150 professionals from Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and beyond. The conference is also open to the public and is aimed at anyone who is involved in labor or employment arbitration. Walk-up registration is available. (On Nov. 5, a pre-conference event will be held, with the full conference on Nov. 6.)

“Through the 24th Annual Labor Arbitration Conference, we aim to empower professionals in the dynamic fields of labor relations and human resources, foster connections, and equip attendees with the insights and skills needed to navigate the evolving landscape of the workplace,” said Peg Boyd, interim director of the Schmidt Center. “It’s a platform where expertise converges, and where stakeholders leave inspired, equipped, and ready to lead change in the labor field.”

Experts from federal and state agencies, distinguished labor and employment lawyers, and accomplished academics will headline the event. This year’s lineup delves into crucial subjects such as interest arbitration, the impact of artificial intelligence in the workplace, navigating the complexities of social media, and dissecting recent landmark court decisions and arbitrations such as the United Auto Workers and Writers Guild of America strikes.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in immersive practice sessions, designed to equip novice labor and management advocates with the essential skills required to build and present compelling arbitration cases.

Keynote speaker Daniel Rainey, principal at Holistic Solutions Inc. and distinguished fellow of the National Center for Technology and Dispute Resolution, will deliver an address that promises to be both enlightening and transformative.

Beyond the sessions, the labor arbitration conference provides an invaluable platform for professionals to stay at the forefront of their respective fields, fostering networking opportunities and spirited discussions that spark innovation.
