8 fun facts about URI Oozeball

Oozeball 2018 set to take place April 22

KINGSTON, R.I. – April 17, 2018 – Hundreds of University of Rhode Island students will participate in Rhody’s muddiest tradition Sunday, April 22, when URI’s Student Alumni Association hosts Oozeball 2018.

Here are eight things you should know about URI’s annual mud volleyball tournament, Oozeball:

1. The University of Rhode Island Student Alumni Association held its first Oozeball tournament in April 1990.
This URI tradition was started by the SAA to raise money for an endowment fund in the URI Foundation.

2. The first Oozeball chair was Ken Knox ‘90.
Knox wanted to create an event that would boost school spirit. “It was a fun day… Everybody had a blast.”

3. This year’s Oozeball director is Rachel Kane ‘19.
Rachel Kane, a URI junior and nursing major from Braintree, Mass., is running, planning, and overseeing this year’s event.

4. At the first Oozeball tournament in 1990, there were about 500 participants.
This year’s Oozeball will involve 168 teams and about 1,000 players!

5. Each year, the Oozeball field by the Plains Road Lot is plowed by local farmers and drenched by the Kingston Fire Department.

6. This year, the URI Student Alumni Association will be celebrating its 29th Oozeball.
This year’s theme is “Muddernature,” as the event falls on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22 beginning at 9 a.m.
