KINGSTON, R.I. – April 9, 2015 – A team of Barrington high school math whizzes won the 9th annual Calc-Bowl math contest at the University of Rhode Island Wednesday, April 8.

The first-place winners of Barrington’s “Eagles” were Kieran McGartoll, Adam Kelly, Matthew Lamontagne, Teddy Ni and William Yao. The coach was Robert Marley.

This year’s Calc-Bowl featured 15 teams of high school and college undergraduates answering pre-calculus and calculus questions for nearly two hours on the Kingston campus.

URI Mathematics Professor Li Wu says the event is a great way to reach out to high school students and spread the word about the exceptional math department at the University.

“Since we started in 2007, the Calc-Bowl has become our main way to connect with high schools and local colleges in Rhode Island,” says Wu. “The event has become more popular than ever and attracts some of the best high school students to URI.”

Wu organizes the competition annually with her colleagues Professors Tom Bella, Lubos Thoma and James Baglama. Sponsors were Belmont Fruit Market, Pi Mu Epsilon, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the URI Foundation, the URI Math Department and Wiley publishing.

The top teams won gift certificates to the URI bookstore.
