URI’s Council for Exceptional Children to honor outstanding advocate

KINGSTON, R.I.- April 24, 2012- Warwick resident Claudia Lowe will be honored as this year’s outstanding advocate by the University of Rhode Island’s Council for Exceptional Children.

Student members and leaders of the organization will also be honored during the celebration Wednesday, May 2, at 4 p.m. in room 219 of Chafee Social Science Center.

Lowe began her journey into the Down syndrome community 31 years ago when her oldest child, Katie, was born with the disability. At the time, there were no parent support groups, so in June of 1982, Lowe founded the Down Syndrome Society of Rhode Island, Inc. She served as president for three years in the early 1990s. In 1995, Lowe received the society’s annual award for outstanding work in the field of Down syndrome. She became coordinator of the organization in March 1998. Lowe has also served on a number of other boards including the Rhode Island Developmental Disabilities Council, Rhode Island Arc, the Warwick Special Education Advisory Committee, and the National Down Syndrome Partnership Alliance.
