WHO: Joe Augustine, URI men’s hockey coach for 24 years, who recently posted his 500th win at the helm of the Rams. Coaches, players and alumni will be on hand for the program.
WHAT: Ceremony to honor one of most successful coaches in University of Rhode Island history. His winning percent of .652 is tops among all Rhode Island coaches, including legendary Frank Keaney. The Scituate resident is on the cusp of capturing his 24th 20-win season. Augustine nailed down his 500th win on the road Friday, Jan. 4, with a 5-3 victory over West Chester University. On Saturday, Jan. 5, the Rams won 4-3 in overtime against the same Pennsylvania squad. After splitting with Delaware over the weekend (Jan. 11 & 12), Augustine now has a lifetime record of 502 wins, 225 losses and 42 ties. And the Scituate resident still has nine more regular season games, league and national playoffs to add to that tally this year.
WHEN: Saturday. Jan. 19, before the 4 p.m. start of the URI-Niagara men’s hockey game. Prior to Saturday’s game against Niagara, fans can enjoy watching the famous Hanson Brothers from the movie “Slap Shot” at 1 p.m. as they suit up with URI hockey alumni and drop the puck against players from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). All proceeds benefit the non-profit World War II Foundation.
