KINGSTON, R.I. — February 1, 2012 –Keaney Blue is generally the proper attire for a University of Rhode Island athletic event, but pink is in vogue for two upcoming games at the Ryan Center.
Fans attending the URI women’s basketball game at 2 p.m. Feb. 11 against La Salle University and the men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 against St. Joseph’s University are asked to wear pink in honor of the Athletic Department’s sixth annual Pink Out. The event will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The Pink Out is being organized by marketing students and athletes. Students will be selling special pink T-shirts for $7 each at the game, with all of the proceeds going directly to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The shirts also can be purchased on campus at Hope Dining Commons between noon and 1 p.m. weekdays, at all men’s and women’s basketball games leading up to the Pink Out and at select other locations.
“It’s a great event for the campus and South County community to get behind and raise funds and awareness for a local organization here in Rhode Island,” said Adam Schemm, director of marketing in the URI Athletic Department.
The Pink out has raised more than $51,000 over the past five years.
The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation, based in Lincoln, was started in 2004 by her family. Gloria Gemma was the mother of Larry, Leonard and Edward – all URI graduates – and Anthony, Joe, Susan, Joan, Maria and Gloria. The mission of the foundation is to raise breast cancer awareness, increase breast health education and generate funding for breast health programs.
