KINGSTON, R.I. — February 1, 2012 — School vacation is the perfect time to visit Rhode Island’s premier tropical destination, the Roger Williams Park Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
In conjunction with the University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners, the Botanical Gardens will host a week of crafts, activities and eco-themed classes from Feb. 21 through 24.
The week will begin with a closer look at the world beneath our feet with “Dirt! A Journey Through the Earth’s Soil.” Participants will examine worms, create pill bug crafts, listen to a story and play a game. The event is recommended for children ages 6 to 10 and the $8 entry fee covers an adult and child. It will be held Feb. 21 from 10 to 11 a.m.
The Center will hold two introductory origami sessions Feb. 22 at 10 and 11 a.m. The class is open to all ages and Origami instructor Rod Varfley will show participants how to make paper pieces such as a crane or colorful flowers. Children must be accompanied by an adult and the cost is $5.
The Botanical Center will cap the week with Avian Adventures, the perfect introduction to ornithology for children ages 6 to 10. Children will learn about birds nests, eggs, feathers and how to attract the friendly flying creatures to their own backyards. Each student will create a backyard nest kit to bring home. The program will run Feb. 24 from 10 to 11 a.m. and will cost $8 for a child and parent.
