His talk begins at 7 p.m. in Weaver Auditorium in the Coastal Institute building on the URI Kingston campus. It is free and open to the public.
Henderson’s talk will examine the emerging role of landscape architects in urban design and ecology in China, where the profession is often the primary design discipline for urban planning.
Since 2005, Henderson has traveled frequently to China to exhibit his work and lecture on urban social space and landscape ecology in the urban environment. He teaches at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, where he also serves as deputy director of its International Master in Architecture degree program. He has led and assisted on several major landscape design projects in China, including the recent creation of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Forest Park and the Fuzhou University landscape master plan.
Henderson has been recognized with numerous awards for his work, including two awards for design ingenuity from the Providence Sustainable Housing Competition, the Premio Torsanlorenzo International Prize for the Beijing Olympic Forest Park, a planning award for an East Greenwich Commuter Rail Study, and a design award for the Xi Haizhi Model Ecological Park.
The next speaker in the URI Landscape Architecture Lecture Series will be Bill Taylor of Carol R. Johnson & Associates, Boston, discussing “Landscape on the Edge: Cooling and Greening the Desert Coast.” His presentation will take place on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
