More than 100 Rhode Island undergraduates
to showcase federally sponsored research
Program sponsored by URI involves most-four year colleges in state
WHO: Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts, URI Pharmacy Professor Zahir Shaikh, program director of the Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence; URI researcher Andrew Staroscik, director of the academy for the Rhode Island Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and more than 100 undergraduate students from URI, Brown University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University and the Community College of Rhode Island. Research topics include—tick vaccines, fuel cells for energy, algae blooms, chemical compounds that show promise in the treatment of epilepsy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA.
WHAT: Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows Conference, a gathering of undergraduate students from most of the colleges in Rhode Island to display and discuss their research. The work is funded by grants to the University by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Students will present their posters and discuss their findings with audience members. Program is open to the public.
WHEN: Monday, Aug. 3, 8 a.m. to noon. Roberts, Shaihk and Staroscik will offer opening remarks at 8:30 a.m. Poster sessions run from 8:45 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to noon.
