PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Oct 17, 2006 – The Biotechnology Training Initiative, coordinated through the Special Programs Office at the University of Rhode Island’s Feinstein Providence Campus, has expanded its professional development offerings to include hands-on laboratory workshops for biotechnology industry professionals.
The first such offering – and the first in a new lab outfitted for the initiative this fall – will be a workshop on tangential flow filtration Nov. 14-17 (rescheduled from Oct. 23-26).
Arthur J. Blume, coordinator of the Biotechnology Training Initiative, said “This event marks a milestone for this program by offering both lecture and laboratory experiences.”
The new biomanufacturing laboratory on URI’s Feinstein Providence Campus uses the latest equipment to train workers in specialized biotechnology processes so they can learn the advantages and disadvantages of various commercial procedures. The laboratory can accommodate up to 12 trainees at a time.
The tangential flow filtration workshop will be taught by John Rozembersky, a leading expert on the topic who has lectured at URI twice before.
“These state-of-the-art biotechnology industry workshops complement our Biotechnology Manufacturing Program very well,” said Gregory Paquette, director of Biotechnology and Clinical Laboratory Science Programs at URI. “While the latter is playing a major role in workforce development for the rapidly emerging biotechnology industry in Rhode Island, the former is important for keeping the workforce current in the newest technologies.”
The Biotechnology Training Initiative programs are open to academic and professional participants and can offer academic credit for some of its courses. Other offerings through the Training Initiative include a lecture-only tangential flow filtration course, as well as courses in Good Manufacturing and Clinical Practices, Investigator Clinical Practice Training Program, Basic and Improved SOP and Technical Writing Skills, Genomics and Proteomics, and Environmental Health & Safety Challenges in Biotechnology and Industry.
