URI Providence Campus offers lab workshops through Biotechnology Training Initiative

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – February 28, 2007 – The Biotechnology Training Initiative, coordinated through the Special Programs Office at the University of Rhode Island’s Feinstein Providence Campus, offers several professional development courses for biotechnology industry professionals, including hands-on laboratory workshops.

The next such offering is on the subject of tangential flow filtration. A comprehensive one-day course will be offered March 19 or May 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while a four-day advanced workshop on the topic will be held March 20-23 or May 22-25 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both courses will be taught by John Rozembersky, a leading expert on tangential flow filtration who has lectured at URI several times before.

The biomanufacturing laboratory on URI’s Feinstein Providence Campus uses the latest equipment to train workers in specialized biotechnology processes so they can learn the advantages and disadvantages of various commercial procedures. The laboratory can accommodate up to 15 trainees at a time.

“These state-of-the-art biotechnology industry workshops complement our Biotechnology Manufacturing Program very well,” said Gregory Paquette, director of Biotechnology and Clinical Laboratory Science Programs at URI. “While the latter is playing a major role in workforce development for the rapidly emerging biotechnology industry in Rhode Island, the former is important for keeping the workforce current in the newest technologies.”

The Biotechnology Training Initiative programs are open to academic and professional participants and can offer academic credit for some of its courses.
