KINGSTON, R.I. – April 23, 2007 – University of Rhode Island professor Judith Swift has been named the 2007 Woman of the Year by the URI Association for Professional and Academic Women (APAW) for her contributions to the advancement of women.

The reception and award ceremony to honor Swift and her ongoing commitment to equity and advancement of women will be held May 1 at 3 p.m.

“I am, of course, honored,” Swift said. “I hope this award and the accompanying event will yet again help to focus people on the need to be inclusive and never limit anyone’s aspirations or dilute their perceived talents based on race, gender, socioeconomic class, disability or any other aspect of a person that causes one group to see him or her as part of the ‘other.’ The time for any tolerance of such distinctions is over.”

Swift, a professor of communications and theatre, was nominated by several colleagues. To be named for the honor, the APAW executive committee takes into consideration the nominator recommendations, how well the individual works for the equity of women, the degree to which she exceeds the requirements of her position, and a review of her résumés.

A $25 registration fee includes hors d’oeuvres, a complimentary beverage, gratuity and tax and a contribution to Swift’s selected charity. That charity is the Benson Scholarship Endowment. “Estes was a dear friend and collaborator who died,” she said. “He was a champion of excellence, opportunity and equity.”
