URI/Theatre will hold auditions for its upcoming winter production of Urinetown on Saturday, Dec. 3, 1 to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 4, 7 to 10 p.m. in G Studio, Fine Arts Center, URI Kingston Campus. Callbacks will be on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 6 to 11 p.m.
People auditioning must prepare and memorize a one -to -two minute contemporary monologue that is comic in nature and be prepared to sing a memorized song from the musical theatre field. Bring sheet music; a pianist will be provided. Dance auditions will not be held at this preliminary audition; they will be featured at callbacks. Rehearsals begin the week of Jan. 10 for principals and Jan. 17 for the full ensemble.
Urinetown is a love story by Greg Kotis that takes place during a time of upheaval and revolution. Due to a water shortage, the government has outlawed the use of private toilets. Citizens must use public, pay-for-use toilets owned and operated by the corrupt Caldwell B. Caldwell. Anyone who refuses to pay is immediately sent to Urinetown and never heard from again.
The musical satire won Tony Awards in 2002 for “Best Direction,” “Best Book,” and “Best Original Musical Score.” Paula McGlasson, chair of URI’s Theatre Department, will direct the URI/ Theatre production.
Urinetown will be performed in J Studio, Feb. 16 to Feb. 18, Feb. 22 to Feb. 25, and March 1 to March 4 at 7:30 p.m. The matinee performance will be held Feb. 19 at 3 p.m.
